The South Burlington High School (SBHS) Speech Team was victorious earlier this month at the Vermont State Championship Tournament in Montpelier. Competing against contenders from across the state, SBHS team members proved themselves exemplary in many categories of speech including Radio, Drama, Duo Drama, Prose, Extemporaneous Speaking, Poetry, and Performance Poetry.

The Speech team, led by SBHS juniors and co-captains Harry Quick and Ann Wong, consists of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, who are already looking to next year. Thrilled about the win, they are hoping to grow the league and to branch out to new areas of competition.
Co-coaches Carly Bennett, who teaches English to middle schoolers in Shelburne, and SBHS English teacher Veronica White were named Speech Coaches of the Year at the ceremony. White remarked, “This win is a testament to this group of young people who have worked hard all year. They make coaching a pleasure, adding, “We have incredible support from the school district and the greater South Burlington community and our phenomenal AD, Mike Jabour. This was a recipe for success.”

According to White, it has been six years since a South Burlington speech team took top honors at states, so the victory was been hard won. “Everyone is extremely proud but this is the just the start for this great team.”
