The Rebels won the state championship in dramatic fashion this past Saturday at Buck Hard Field, taking the Hornets of Essex into a scoreless overtime period. The championship hung in the balance of a penalty shootout and South Burlington’s Aiman Ginawi looped a right-footed kick off the fingertips of Essex goalie Ben Wood. The shootout wrapped up with a 4-2 South Burlington advantage and the championship win.

The Hornets controlled the game until literally the final seconds of regulation, when the Rebel’s Alex Pasanen scored the game-tying goal to send the contest into overtime with 8.4 seconds remaining on the clock. With the championship win, the Rebels wrap up a 16-1 regular season, laying claim to their second state championship in the past four years. Essex ends their year with a 14-3-1 record.
