South Burlington resident Ashley McDonald, currently a junior at the University of Vermont has been selected to serve as a field hockey captain for the 2013 season alongside seniors Colleen Slaughter and Stephanie Zygmunt, as announced by head coach Nicki Houghton.
McDonald has played in 16 games over her first two seasons with the Catamounts. The forward had an impressive sophomore campaign, and tallied a big goal for Vermont against 25th-ranked UMass in late September.
McDonald, the daughter of Jody and Roxanne McDonald, graduated from South Burlington High School where she was a standout athlete. She was named first team all-state and All-Metro in each of her last three seasons. She helped SBHS win the state championship after scoring 32 goals and adding five assists, and she was named team MVP. She was named to the Vermont Twin State Team following her senior year. She also played lacrosse and ran track in high school and was named first team all-state and All-Metro in lacrosse as a senior as she helped South Burlington earn a pair of state championships.
In addition to her athletic achievements, McDonald made the 2011-12 Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. She is an elementary education major.
