Track and Field

On May 5, South Burlington hosted the Coaches vs. Cancer Twilight Invitational. “The Twilight meet is our first invitational of the season in preparation for the Burlington Invitational,” Coach Dennis Akey said. “We had a lot of stellar performances, especially considering there were over 40 competitors in every event and over 1,400 entries overall,” he added.

The top performers for the Wolves were:

• Cora Kakalec, 1st in the 100, 4th in the 200, 6th in the long jump
• Odessa O’Brien, 6th in the 100, 3rd in long jump, 2nd in triple jump
• Tara Lowensohn, 3rd in the 400, 5th in the 200
• Avery Barrino, 5th in the 200
• Ryan Steele, 3rd in the 400, 4th in the triple jump
• Sonya Heldman, 5th in the 800
• Lucas Calcagni, 3rd in the 3000, 4th in the 1500
• Camille Bolduc, 6th in the 3000
• Jackson Hauman, 4th in the 3000
• Emmett Edwards, 5th in the 3000
• Girls 4x100 relay of Kakalec, O’Brien, Lowensohn, and Maddie Liebegott, 3rd place

Last Saturday, the Burlington Invitational was held at the D.G. Weaver Athletic Complex. In the combined scores results, South Burlington came in fifth place.

Boys Lacrosse

The boys lacrosse team had a tough last week after dropping two games against two Division 1 opponents. On Tuesday, they traveled to Essex for a matchup with the Hornets. Rees Baker had three goals while Calvin Hultgren and Aaron Murakami scored twice. Nick Liscinsky had two assists and Ryan Hockenbury turned away eight shots, but a scoreless fourth quarter left the Wolves with a 9-7 loss.

On Friday, May 11, South Burlington nearly defeated the undefeated CVU Redhawks after trailing for most of the first three quarters. A come from behind effort propelled CVU to the 9-7 win. Cale DuBrul had three goals, Nick Liscinsky (assist) earned two, and Calvin Hultgren (three assists) and Collin Johnson scored once. Ryan Hockenbury had 15 saves. Burlington travels to town on May 18.

Girls Lacrosse

On Friday, May 11, host Middlebury defeated the Wolves 11-5. After a tight first half, the Tigers slowly pulled away, but Dakota Crane scored twice with an assist, while Lilly Truchon, Lindsey Booth and Willow Yager had one goal each. Goalie Claire Phillips secured three saves. The team travels to Essex on May 19.


On May 7, Anna Borrazzo struck out 13 in a complete game, but Colchester’s pitcher pitched a no-hitter and the Wolves fell 14-0.

Two days later, the Wolves’ offense hit its stride with a 20-5 victory over host Rice. Aly Brady struck out 11 and gave up only three hits while Brianna Belisle had two hits, and three RBIs. Katie Cheung hit a double and scored four times.

On Thursday, May 10, South Burlington had five players with multiple hit games as it cruised to a 19-4 victory over visiting CVU. Sarah Brown had three hits with a triple, Jenna Bouchard (three), Christine Constant (two) and Rachel Hebert (one) all contributed for the Wolves’ offense. Cheung earned the win as the pitcher. The team is in action again on May 19 versus MMU.


The baseball team was 2-1 last week after a busy seven days. On Monday, visiting Colchester squeaked by the Wolves with a 3-1 victory. John Thibeault pitched a complete game, and Andrew Cunningham had the lone RBI.

The next day, South Burlington got hot from the plate and cruised to a 10-0 win over MMU. Ben Tate earned the win from the mound, while Sammy Premsagar and Danny Terhune earned two hits and two RBIs in the road win. Nolan Antonicci was 2-4 with three runs and Brendan Precourt was 1-3 with three RBIs.

On Thursday, South Burlington, led by a Jack Ambrosino one-hit shutout as the Wolves snuck by CVU 1-0 after eight innings. Chance O’Connor hit an RBI groundout at the bottom of the eighth. The team takes on MMU at home on Saturday, May 19.

The South Burlington boys tennis team had a busy week of action.
