Master Laurie Shover, owner and instructor at Villari’s Self-Defense and Wellness Center of South Burlington, rose to the rank of 10th degree black belt, Judan, in Shaolin Kempo Karate November 4 under the direction of Great Grandmaster Fred Villari of West Palm Beach, Florida. Shover is one of only two women to hold this rank in the entire system which spans over 40,000 students worldwide.
Shover has been training since 1975 and started teaching in 1980, running dojos in Essex, Burlington, South Burlington, and several other satellite schools throughout Chittenden and Addison County. She was inducted to the International Kenpo Hall of Fame during their prestigious Gathering of Eagles event early this year, where only those who have made great contributions to the martial arts are recognized with the honor.
Villari’s recently moved to a larger dojo facility in South Burlington to accommodate their expanding programs to include the young dragons - children age four to eight, girl and boy power, teen leadership, beginner and advanced self-defense, low impact classes for those with injuries or ailments, as well as Shover’s specialized Chi Kung classes “The Here and Now,” for which she also holds the rank of Master.
