Michaela Forgione of South Burlington was among 20 young athletes who were selected to compete at the 26th Annual All-Star Twin State Hockey Classic to benefit Make-A-Wish. The Vermont team faced off against the New Hampshire team at the University of Vermont’s (UVM) Gutterson Field House June 30. Although Vermont lost 2-4, Forgione scored a goal in the sudden-death shoot-out at the end of the skills competition the night before, clinching that victory for Vermont.

“Of course, there was some disappointment in our loss to New Hampshire, but the experience of being on the same team with those who have been rivals throughout the years was surprisingly great,” said Forgione, a recent graduate of Rice Memorial High School. “It is an honor to be recognized for playing a sport that I have enjoyed since I was three years old. Make-A-Wish is such a wonderful foundation and it was an incredible privilege to be chosen.”

Forgione plans to attend UVM and major in neuroscience with a minor in classical studies. When asked if she plans to continue playing hockey, she says, “While my competitive career may have come to a close, I can never fully imagine walking away from the game. Hockey has been an integral part of my childhood. My older brother played for UVM, my sister played for Rice, and my little brother also plays on an elite traveling team. Some of my fondest memories are moments on our backyard ice rink.”

The All Star Twin State Hockey Classic showcases top high school, recently graduated seniors from Vermont, versus rival New Hampshire players. All proceeds from the event go to fulfill special wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions. The event has raised more than $275,000 toward those wishes.
