An open house in honor of Nancy LaVarnway’s retirement from South Burlington High School (SBHS) was held December 12 in the school’s Career Development Center (CDC) office. LaVarnway may have been the director of the CDC, but she is also a mentor, advisor, and favorite teacher to many students who have graced the halls of SBHS. On hand at the open house were her current CDC students as well as alumni, many who traveled a distance so they could be there to wish LaVarnway well as she embarks on her newest chapter. CDC students honored the retiree at their own farewell party with a framed photo of their group along with a hummingbird brooch. Although the pin was in recognition of LaVarnway’s love of birds, the hummingbird is also a symbol of continuity and infinity; two concepts that speak to LaVarnway’s substantial legacy at the high school.
